Nighttime Bathroom Trips Tend To Increase With Age

You may have noticed that around 30 years old, people start consistently getting up to pee at night. By the time they reach 45 or so, they might be getting up to pee twice every night, and by the time they’re 70, they might be getting up four to five times a night. One nighttime bathroom trip is enough of a sleep interruption to cause fatigue, brain fog, and crankiness over time. Four or five nighttime bathroom trips can be quite harmful to a person’s quality of life.

The main reason why people get up to pee more often as they age is because of a weakening pelvic floor. Basically, our pelvic floors are a collection of muscles that support our bladders and other pelvic organs. As we get older, the pelvic floor muscles weaken, just like other muscles, and can’t do their job as effectively. While there are exercises that we can do to strengthen these muscles, like Kegels, they can be difficult to do properly and we’d have to do a whole lot of them on a regular basis to make any progress. It’s hard to find time to work on general body strength, let alone pelvic floor strength specifically.

Here’s the good news: there’s a treatment available in Halifax, Nova Scotia that can help you reduce, if not eliminate, your nighttime bathroom trips. The treatment is easy, non-invasive, pain-free, and unlike other pelvic floor treatments, you don’t even need to take off your clothes. It’s called the Emsella chair.

No More Getting Up To Pee?

Emsella is a device in the shape of a chair. All you have to do is sit on it for 28 minutes at a time while fully clothed. The chair emits a type of energy called high intensity-focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM), which causes muscles contractions in the pelvic floor. Over time, these contractions strengthen the muscles. The strengthening effect helps the pelvic floor do a better job of supporting the bladder, which means you don’t have to get up to pee as much. Say hello to better sleep!

Helping you sleep through the night is not the only benefit that Emsella offers. This device is Health Canada-approved for the treatment of stress, urge, and mixed urinary incontinence in men and women. For example, women who have had babies and women who are going through menopause commonly suffer from urinary incontinence. Emsella can improve or even eliminate their symptoms. It also helps people improve their core strength and sexual wellness for men and women.
