When we destroy hair follicles at their roots, hairs don’t grow back. This is how laser hair removal / permanent hair reduction works. Providers can accomplish permanent hair reduction with a range of devices. For example, IPL devices can remove hair, but they aren’t designed for hair removal and they’re not very good at it. Diode lasers are an option, but they aren’t optimal for lighter skin types and they pose higher burn risks for darker skin types. Alexandrite lasers are the gold standard for lighter skin types, while Nd:YAG lasers are the gold standard for darker skin types.

Some providers turn people away if their hair is blond, red, white, or grey. Contraindications are conditions or circumstances that disqualify a person from treatment. For Clarity II laser hair removal, here are some of the contraindications:

Tattoos or permanent make-up in the treatment area (we can work around them, not over them)
Pregnancy
Nursing
Skin cancer
Atypical moles or questionable pigmented lesions that may be suspected melanoma
Accutane within the previous 6 months
Antibiotics within the last 2 weeks

No matter what device you use for laser hair removal, you will always need a series of treatments. This is because hair grows in cycles, which makes it impossible to destroy all of the hair follicles in one area at the same time. It typically takes 6-8 treatments to achieve optimal results.

It’s imperative to discontinue using self-tanning products 2 weeks prior to treatments. If you use these products, you should also thoroughly cleanse the treatment area with an abrasive exfoliating scrub to remove all product 2 weeks before treatment.

Be vigilant with sun protection 4-6 weeks before your treatments. That means avoid direct sunshine if possible, use SPF 30 or higher (don’t forget to re-apply!), and avoid tanning beds. If you disregard this advice, you may develop hypopigmentation (white spots) after treatment, which may not clear for 2-3 months or more.

If you have a tan or a darker skin type, a skin bleaching regimen may be started 4-6 weeks before treatment (not required).

If you’re prone to Herpes breakouts or you have a history of disease stimulated by heat, we recommend taking prophylaxis before treatment to avoid a flare up.

About 3 days before treatments, discontinue using topical agents on the treatment area like retinol, vitamin C, glycolic acid, or anything else that may irritate the skin.

Avoid bleaching, waxing, or plucking hair for 4-6 weeks prior to treatment. This will reduce the efficacy of your laser hair removal treatments.

Always thoroughly shave the treatment area within 24 hours of your treatment.

When you go to your appointment, your skin should be clean. That means no lotion, make-up, perfume, powder, or bath or shower oil in the treatment area.

Immediately after treatment, there will be erythema (redness) and edema (swelling) of each hair follicle in the treatment site. You may or may not notice this. Your skin may feel a bit sensitive for a few hours after treatment.

At home, you may wish to use a soothing skincare product like aloe vera gel. When bathing, treat the skin gently as though you had a sunburn and tone it down a bit if you’re used to taking super hot showers.

There are a few things you should avoid for at least 24 hours. These include strenuous exercise, topical agents that may irritate the skin, deodorant (if you’re doing your underarms), saunas, hot tubs, and chlorinated swimming pools. If your skin feels sensitive, you may wish to wear loose garments for about 24 hours.

Avoid sun exposure for 24 hours after treatment to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation and burning. Minimize sun exposure for the duration of treatment series by staying out of direct sunlight, covering the treatment area, or using a sunblock (SPF 30+) at all times.

Do not pick or scratch the treated skin and avoid any type of hair removal like waxing, electrolysis, or tweezing that will disturb the hair follicles for 4-6 weeks after treatments. It’s okay to shave.

Shedding of the treated hair may take place 5 – 14 days after treatment.

Clarity II laser hair removal treatments should be 4 – 10 weeks apart depending on how coarse your hair is and the areas that we’re treating. We’ll be more specific with our recommendation during your free consultation.

Generally, the laser hair removal treatment creates a mild snapping sensation on the skin. You’ll also feel Cryogen Cooling at the same time. This cooling makes treatment more comfortable, especially in more sensitive areas. Clarity II laser hair removal is probably the most comfortable laser hair removal option available.
