For most people, there’s a bit of mystery around Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). In another blog post, we discuss why so many people including medical professionals have never heard of TMS, despite its excellent safety and efficacy profiles. In this article, we use a traffic jam analogy to explain how TMS works. It rewires the brain to improve a range of mental health and wellness conditions.

You’re Not Broken

It’s no surprise that depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues wear you down. Over time, problems add up and bleed into one another, making it increasingly challenging to cope with regular life. Many people who live with a mental health issue for any period of time feel broken. We’re here to tell you that you’re not broken – you’re just stuck.

How TMS Works: Fixing A Traffic Jam

how TMS works

It may help to think of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions as causing traffic jams in the brain. Maybe there’s a malfunctioning stoplight that has caused a car accident. Vehicles are backed up with few getting through the intersection. The longer you’re stuck, the more frustrating and problematic the situation becomes.

Doing TMS therapy is like deploying a team of workers to remedy the situation. They redirect traffic, fix the stoplight, and tidy up the accident site. Since this particular intersection is prone to traffic jams, they even build a new road system around the intersection. Now vehicles can easily navigate in and around the area. This is basically how TMS works.

In reality, TMS uses magnetic field energy to build new synaptical connections in the brain. In other words, neurons are communicating more and better with each other. This is called neuroplasticity, a term that describes the brain’s natural ability to adapt and heal.

Building Resilience

It might seem like TMS is about pushing happiness, calmness, or some other quality into the brain. It’s not. It’s about building resilience in the brain.

Typically, people who complete TMS therapy are better able to emotionally regulate and cope with life’s challenges. Things that negatively affected them before don’t negatively affect them anymore or as much. It’s because they’ve developed the ability to cope better.
